Progress cannot be made unless you first discover that there needs to be change. St. Louis Public School District, Jefferson Elementary School, Urban Strategies Inc., Grace Hill Settlement House and Employment Connections both saw this to be true. In order to provide two-generational support, there must be an opportunity created for each member of a family to succeed. Focusing on the community surrounding Jefferson Elementary School, Dr. Leslie Bonner, principal opened the doors of her school to create a dual event geared towards career exploration and job opportunities.
On November 21st, 2019, as students arrived at school, Jefferson Elementary School was preparing for an eventful day. Speakers and employers entered the gymnasium where they would discuss their careers and what led them to where they are today. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions to six speakers from a varied of backgrounds. These included; a Peace Corp Teacher, the CEO of Employment Connections, a Senior Project Manager of IBM, a Facilitator, a Parole Officer and an Investigator.
Following this event was a job fair for members of the neighboring community. From this event, 25 individuals were in attendance, leading to multiple job offers on site. Due to the success of each event, each organization has decided to make this a quarterly event.
